A toast to the immortal bard, Robbie Burns, I salute your memory with a dram tonight.
It was a beautiful day in Apache Junction, the kind of weather we are here for and came to enjoy. I think it was in the 70's and very nice in the sun.
It was Marg's day to go to the Fort with the Gamblin' Gals, there were 6 of them today, so a regular pilgrimage. I offered to drive in case they had a room problem, but it seems they worked it out. As usual they were on the road at 9:30, returning shortly after 4:00. The day went well and one of them returned a big winner from the bingo & she was smiling and doing the happy dance when she saw I had the golf cart waiting for her so she could ride back to our place. Marg had been in the break-even category until now and won $300 today simply by yelling "Bingo", so was a happy gal today!
I went to the coffee klatch this morning and it was well attended. In fact it was too well attended. Our table was drawn last to go for donuts, so I held back checking out what was left as the pickings get pretty slim at the end. Well that is exactly what happened, so rather than get a donut I didn't care for I passed and just had coffee. It was so well attended, I could not sit with the regular bunch, so ended up at a table with mostly Canucks for a change. They are from BC, but I don't hold that against them. LOL It turned out to be fortunate as I got to discuss some FB postings with Malcolm who produces much of the hand outs and posters.
I posted the events using the information I got at coffee earlier. There were a couple of them plus some pictures from a past event that I added to the site. Earlier I had some problems posting the files that Malcolm sent me, so I just scanned the posters as that seems to be the easiest.
After a bite of lunch [hand made by yours truly], I went out to wash the truck. For here it was dirty, but back in GP I probably would not have bothered. I even washed the box inside so when guys go golfing with me I won't be embarrassed to put their clubs in the back. I spent quite a bit of time spraying on the clear rinse as the water speckles so bad here and it seems to have paid off. It was a good deal, I spent $6 and sprayed the truck & box interior with soap, washed it with the brush, rinsed it and still had 5 minutes to spray it all over a few times with the rinse agent, ending up with a good job. When I got back I did the windows and mirrors again with vinegar and water as well as wiped down the interior.
I washed some windows and wiped down the awnings. We get a fair amount of wind off the mountains here and consequently dust. Then I cleaned up the battery charger for the cart. It must have had something spilled on it from the previous owner so before it got baked on, wanted to get rid of it. While I was fooling with that I disconnected the reverse alarm on the cart. It gets annoying after a while and most people seem to not bother with them.
When Marg got home with news of her big win, I suggested dining out tonight. We went to Appleby's down on by Superstition Springs. They have good food and we had not been for a while. Marg had an appetizer platter with a variety of half a dozen different ones, something she does quite often. In fact they give you so many she brought a doggy bag of almost half of it home. Something that seems to happen to us with regularity is we get there before the dinner rush starts, so walked right up and got a table. By the time our food got there, people were lined up to the door waiting for tables.
We got back to the park just in time to go for animal races. We started out OK, but success was not to be ours tonight. Marg picks the same 3 and sticks with them for all 8 races. I pick the elephant and two others that change from race to race. We had some interesting results and lots of laughs tonight and ended up losing a small amount.

Wednesday, Jan 24th
News Flash - the weather turned warm and it was a gorgeous day in the valley, reaching well into the 70's today. Now this is the Arizona we signed up for.
Got up early and went with the group from the park to Apache Sun this morning. We are starting to have a full golf group Wednesday mornings now. I had a good round, starting out on the par 5 with a bogie, left the putt about 2 inches from the cup. I had 3 putts today like that. Now you might think that was enough to be a downer, but the 2nd hole was a par, the result of a great putt. I drove well and putted reasonably well and after 8 I was 40. I hit a great drive on #9, chipped on and 4 putted, oh well still a good round for me and the weather was great. The guys in the foursome are some of the ones I enjoy playing with. I rode with old Joe who is a real character, but still plays some good golf.
When I got home, we had a bite to eat and then went down to a celebration of life for one of our residents who passed away in December. Her family from Iowa were here and they were amazed at how many people attended, the hall was full. It was nice because she had several very good friends and it gave them closure. For my part I took a few pictures at the request of the park manager and put them on the association FB site.
After I played pool. It seems I was in the shark tank, as the guys I played with are 3 of the better players here and there were some very good games. Even though I was on the losing side quite a few times, we had fun. I think I should always beware of playing with anyone from Minnesota. LOL While I played, Marg went out for a few things. They were the items she went out for yesterday and got detoured and still needed. One of them was bread and buns, which she wanted for the supper tonight.
After I spent some time getting the photo's posted it was time for supper, so we made our way to the hall. The Turkey Soup supper is a long standing event here. It started as a way to deal with leftover turkey from Christmas and is so popular they have to buy more turkey to use for it. The hall was full tonight and seating is a bit of a challenge when that happens. For that reason we never sat with the people we usually hang with, fortunately our circle of friends is larger than that and we sat with some we see less of, which was nice. In fact the pastor and his wife were at our table. Marg had brought two types of fresh buns and both were very good, so when we shared them at the table and she produced a dish of butter, it was a big hit. The soup was good and there was lots of it. The only bad thing was a medical emergency in the hall. A guy collapsed and they called the ambulance. A couple of us guys went out to direct the emergency responders to the right place, my place was near the gate. The fellow was checked and then sent to the hospital in the ambulance. Turned out he was mainly dehydrated and the room was fairly warm. It turned out he was fine and returned home in the evening.
A funny story, Marg was out for a bit and one of the residents came by asking about the status of the event. She told him he should go in and have the turkey soup; that there was lots. He said I'm not eating that, the last guy who did is being looked after by all these emergency vehicles. Marg responded that lots of us ate it an we were all fine, to which he said - You're not home yet are you? Then after they took the guy away her and some ladies gave the firefighters a couple of ice cream pails of soup as well as some fresh bread and the rolls Marg had left.
After supper I played poker, we had two tables again tonight. I got the lucky seat and had a good night. I guess I got there a few minutes early, but when I started winning the banter about getting there early started up. Anyway when I got back I had to dump some money out of my bag so I don't look quite so successful next week. Appearances are really important when it comes to this.
Marg had some personal time and basically attended to her self, you know things like hair dye, legs shaved, shower, etc.

The weather is really starting to warm up and the day started a bit more pleasant.
After a bite to eat and coffee we decided to go out for a bit. We went to Home Depot looking at driveway coatings as ours has a large rust stain in one area and some vehicle dripping stain in another. The stains are very old, so well set in the concrete and we would like to get rid of the outdoor carpet we are using. The fellow we dealt with seemed very knowledgeable and gave us a range of options. The best is naturally the most expensive, a kind of coating. The middle of the road is a concrete stain and then there is paint. We know that we don't want to paint and the coating is about 10 times the cost of the stain. We have decided to wait until either the end of our stay or the start of it next year. One of our biggest concerns is the prep work and ultimately the covering will require everything be taken off of the driveway, and there is lots of stuff. Then we went to an RV place that deals in carports and privacy screens as well as trailer parts. We are thinking of putting something across the back of the Az room to block some of the wind that comes through there. It is quite pricey so we went to a place that deals in recovered or salvaged stuff from trailers and such, but they had nothing suitable.
Well, so far the day hasn't cost me anything, so we went to the Superstition Ranch market. That is where Marg gets most of her vegetables and fruit. Without a word of a lie we came away with all we could carry for about $10. While going in I stopped at a guy who is selling subscriptions to the local paper. Usually we get the paper, it's a great source of coupons. LOL In fact the guy gave us a huge coupon book just for taking the subscription. You can't beat the price, it was $18 for two months delivered to the door. The TV guide was another $4. The only catch to it is that it is intended to be an introductory offer that becomes a regular subscription, so I have to phone and cancel it before the 20th of the month, so I need to remember March 15th or so to call and cancel it. We have done this for a few years now and it has worked well. In the way out I joked with the young guy that he cost more than all the produce we bought, which included a 10 pound bag of spuds and a 5 pound bag of oranges in addition to all the vegetables.
Back home for tuna sandwiches and then Marg went out for some retail therapy. Unfortunately the road to the center she was going to had been blocked off, so she had to divert to the freeway. She made out fine and just went west to the next exit and made her way back, even finding Hobby Lobby and a few other alternatives.
Me I went to play pool this afternoon. There were quite a few guys there and we had a good time. My game was quite a bit better today and that is when they fear me. LOL
Supper was the left over stew and then we went to bingo. That was not a successful, but as all the losers say - we were close, just needed one number several times. A couple of the Gamblin Gals were winners tonight, but not the right one, LOL. We are getting a new bingo machine; with any luck it will be better to us. They asked me to take a few pictures of the old one before it goes, so that will be next weeks project.

The day started out chilly, but as the sun came out became very pleasant. The daytime high was forecast at 63, but felt like it got a bit warmer.
I left early with 2 other guys from the park to meet Gerry at Encanto for a round of golf. We played 18 holes and it seemed like a lot more, probably owing to the cool weather at the start, or maybe it was the number of times I had to swing the club. LOL The course was fairly busy, but play went at a good pace. I think we were about 10 minutes over the 4 hours I would expect it to take a foursome. I lost one ball, which is not too bad for me. One of the guys had never been through the downtown so had not seen the tunnel before. When we finished he commented that he didn't think he would ever drive in traffic like that. I think it might have been the merge on entering the freeway, you go right in to the tunnel and then have to cross 8 lanes to get in the HOV within about 3/4 of a mile.
Marg did laundry and some housekeeping this morning. She took out all the margarita glasses and wine glasses and washed them so they are party ready. There are a bunch of them in the open cabinet near the table and they hadn't been looked at since we got here. Can never tell when a party might break out.
After I got back we went out to Bob & Karen's for supper. Bob was deep frying bologna and people brought a few things to go with it. This deep fried bologna is fairly common in the part of Ohio they come from. It was a small group [9] and it seems more people are starting to think about having smaller group gatherings. It tends to be more personal and allows for some meaningful conversation. It was kind of like a burger on a bun. The bologna is season and placed in the deep fryer until it's crisp. It's actually quite good.

Sunday
Brrr, it was cold last night and we slept with the covers pulled right up to our chins. That cold front is supposed to last for 2 or 3 days. On the weather reports they are getting snow in the high country and north of here in the mountains. I think about 8 inches in one place. How cold was it in the valley, well a few places had frost.
I got up late and it worked out pretty good as Marg made me ham & eggs with hash browns for breakfast. Those of you who know I enjoy breakfast will appreciate what a great start to my day that was. After breakfast I took on a project in the cupboards. I fixed it so the griddle can be hung up so it doesn't take so much room in the pots cupboard. Then I made some small shelves in the spices cupboard so you can see what's in there. I had some pieces of finished pine kicking about that were just the ticket for this project. Anyway Marg was pretty happy with the outcome on both accounts.
Marg did some house cleaning and after breakfast made a stew for tonight. She put it in the slow cooker, so it pretty much percolated away all day. She had all the veggies and some steak that she cut up for it. She always uses very good cuts of meat for stew and it shows in the results. No dumplings today though as she needs to make stew in the over for that to work out best.
Took the opportunity to laze about for much of the day. It was quite nice in the sun once it got up. This is one of the nice things about our patio out back, even on a cooler day like today it is very warm back there in the sun. We had a few visitors, one for gingerbread cookies another for copies of my photo's this year so far. She wants to make a new CD to play them on the TV's in the hall during various events.
Supper tonight was the stew and Marg made biscuits in the oven to have with it. They were both very good, in fact the biscuits are almost as good as dumplings, but not quite. She made a large pot, so offered a pot to Linda for their supper. It was a big night for Minnesota in the NFL playoffs, so we were not sure if they had a house full to watch it. It turned out to be just them, so I took a pot of stew over. Gary was so appreciative that I had to stay for a beer with him. Now that is gratitude! LOL
Barely finished in time for ice cream social. It was pretty well attended tonight as the group of "31" players is quite large now and they come for ice cream. In fact the social has been moved up 15 minutes to accommodate them, I guess they are keen to get right at it.

Saturday, Jan 20th
A much cooler day in the Valley of the Sun, well it finally appeared mid-afternoon. A weather system moved in that brought temps down into the 60's and we even had a sprinkle of rain. It was enough to wet the ground, but when reporting on it they were in 100'ths of an inch. I'm not certain we would even call it a rain at home. LOL By the time the sun went down it was quite chilly and is forecast to be that way for a couple of days.
We went out early as there were a couple of large parks having sales today. The one at Rancho Mirage is one we take in every year and Marg always finds something she needs. This year it was a couple of stools that will be making the trip all the way back home. There were a couple of other things, but that wins her find of the day. Linda went with us and she pretty much power shops these things and came back with a lot of treasures. Me, well I did get out of the truck at one and bought a punch and branch clipper. We finished just before the rain started, but the girls were talking about going back as the deals would get really good then. Yeh right!
When we got back she made ham and eggs with hash browns. Well did you forget it's Saturday, breakfast at the hall, well I missed that and just had a bowl of cereal so they could get an early start. Kind of the quid pro quo! Yes it was good, but anything she makes always is.
I went and played some pool in the afternoon. With the rain I thought the place would be full, but there was just one other guy and me. We had some good games and a little fun. Marg went out and picked up a few things. There was some cleaner that she was out of and looking for that she finally found as well as some other great deals. Oh yes, the ladies wear store she likes happened to be next door and she had a bit of success there as well.
Tonight was the sit down dinner in the hall at 5 that we had tickets for. This is something they have been doing for a few years now and it's a chicken breast dinner with cake for desert. It's very good and they give you lots to eat, so well attended. Our next door neighbour wanted to, but was unable to go, so Marg had arranged to get her dinner to-go that we delivered it to her. A very enjoyable evening.

Why do I keep using the day of the week as my title, well how else can a retired guy keep track? Someone said to me today that every day is Saturday for them, well that is not far from my reality.
Started out the day working on my homework. I had a bunch of stuff to do for the annual general meeting of the condo association. How can that be - you ask, well for starters I am all that is left of the audit committee and had to complete the financial review of the December and year end results and then write the report to the board for inclusion in the board package for Wednesday. Then I had to print the proxy form to vote our share in the association that we both signed and then scan it so it could be submitted and finally I had to give them written notice that I would let my name stand for another term as a director. I had a panicky call from my maintenance partner on my notice to stand for re-election not being on file yet.
We had a nice facetime with Charlene and Katie where we learned that Katie received her first offer from a university. This is great news as it means she has a placement for veterinary medicine even though she still has others to hear from. Congratulations to Miss Katie; grandma & grandpa are very proud, even though in our hearts we knew you could do it. Marg rather than watch me work at this stuff, went out to get a few things, first to Bells and then to Walmart. Kind of made me glad I had the other stuff to do. Apparently she was a successful as there were several shopping bags with her.
Lunch today was French Toast, one of my favourites. When she asks if I would like it for any meal, my reply is always the same - you don't ever have to ask, I will always be more than happy with French Toast.
After lunch I went to play pool. The games were pretty even and we had a few laughs in the process. One of the guys I played with is very good, one not so hot-so and the third one of my favourites to play, so it was challenging and enjoyable. Marg had company much of the afternoon and when she went out for the mail visited with a couple of other people in the park and made hot wings for the group pot luck tonight.
When I got home from pool an older couple across the street came to see me about their hot water tank. They had a crew there most of the day replacing it and still do not have hot water. They thought it had no power to it, but that was not the problem. They had a leak and from the water inlet and although I detected power to the element it was not heating water. They wanted to replace the element, but I suggested they first call the company who installed it and see if they would look after the problem as they had paid a very large sum to get the work done. By then it was time to go for happy hour, which was also a celebration/pot luck. It was well attended [about 35] and there was lots of good food and as pot lucks go a few not so good things. It was kind of like a gathering of Hutterites, guys over here, gals over there, but it was all good. To finish it off we had ice cream that Kenny & Doris made in their machine. The cart sure comes in handy when packing chairs and other stuff to these kind of functions.
Started out the day working on my homework. I had a bunch of stuff to do for the annual general meeting of the condo association. How can that be - you ask, well for starters I am all that is left of the audit committee and had to complete the financial review of the December and year end results and then write the report to the board for inclusion in the board package for Wednesday. Then I had to print the proxy form to vote our share in the association that we both signed and then scan it so it could be submitted and finally I had to give them written notice that I would let my name stand for another term as a director. I had a panicky call from my maintenance partner on my notice to stand for re-election not being on file yet.
We had a nice facetime with Charlene and Katie where we learned that Katie received her first offer from a university. This is great news as it means she has a placement for veterinary medicine even though she still has others to hear from. Congratulations to Miss Katie; grandma & grandpa are very proud, even though in our hearts we knew you could do it. Marg rather than watch me work at this stuff, went out to get a few things, first to Bells and then to Walmart. Kind of made me glad I had the other stuff to do. Apparently she was a successful as there were several shopping bags with her.
Lunch today was French Toast, one of my favourites. When she asks if I would like it for any meal, my reply is always the same - you don't ever have to ask, I will always be more than happy with French Toast.
After lunch I went to play pool. The games were pretty even and we had a few laughs in the process. One of the guys I played with is very good, one not so hot-so and the third one of my favourites to play, so it was challenging and enjoyable. Marg had company much of the afternoon and when she went out for the mail visited with a couple of other people in the park and made hot wings for the group pot luck tonight.
When I got home from pool an older couple across the street came to see me about their hot water tank. They had a crew there most of the day replacing it and still do not have hot water. They thought it had no power to it, but that was not the problem. They had a leak and from the water inlet and although I detected power to the element it was not heating water.
