Ah, the Ides of March are upon us. It was a cloudy, windy day and the temperatures feel quite a bit from yesterday. I think it got to the mid to high 60's, pleasant, but not warm by what we normally expect in this area at this time.
I started my day going to the coffee klatch this morning. There was a decent size group this morning, but there was a bit of a different tone to the morning meeting. This is a great way to keep current on happenings in the park an area where there are already indications of the winding down of the winter season activities. A couple we spend a fair amount of time around left for home this morning, to get to a doctors appointment for him.
Marg had a few visitors this morning. One was Wink, the fellow we helped get his golf cart advertised on line. The buy & sell site Marg listed it on is showing 450 people have looked at the ad in the last two days, a statistic he was impressed with. There have also been inquiries from the Craigs List site, but a much smaller number. He has already had people come by and check the cart out, so he is more positive in his outlook about chances of selling it. Then Marg went over to see Shari about the curry dinner we are having at their place tomorrow night. And then to see another gal who is hosting a pot luck dinner Friday to tell her we could not attend because of our conflict. I think there are 3 or 4 couples we are joining for the curry, so it should be a fun event. Then Marg went out for a few supplies so she could make what she has committed to. I think she is doing a butter chicken dish, the rice and getting some naan bread, chutney, etc.
I went to play some pool this afternoon. There were 3 of the regulars playing and then the guy who is new to the park was uncovering a second table. I offered to play him, even if it was just one on one. I say that because he is a very good player and a couple of fellows in the park played him but not for long, apparently quitting early. He is a friendly fellow, so I thought I would give it a whirl. Well my cue stick was hot today. I won every game except the last one where he beat me. It wasn't that I was a better player, I just had a better game plan. Then one of the fellows from the other table stayed to play 3 games with us when that game wrapped up, so it was 2 vs 1 and I did OK in those 3 games as well. Some days you get lucky. In fact I told the guy luck is a big part of my game. The park managers were wandering about with the Century Link people. The are putting in a fiber-optic backbone and will be offering TV & Internet service next year.
When I got back, Marg had returned with a bunch of groceries. Shortly after I got back we had a few visitors one of whom was asking if she knew the happy hour location today. The cool wind was still blowing, so Marg volunteered that it could be at our place. Well sure enough there were a dozen or more folks here for that hour. It ended up being pretty hilarious and lots of laughing.
Supper was a nice bbq steak and baked potato. It was a large T-bone and the beef here is pretty good, not as good as Albert beef, but it's corn fed so the taste is quite good.
After supper we went to the animal races - Go Bimbo! This was the last one of the season, so they gave away cash prizes on a draw basis. They take a bit out of each payout during the year to give them a cushion in the event they have a calculating error when they make the payouts. Marg won most races and had doubled her bets, so she won $6.75 plus $4 in one of the draws, so vey cool. Me, I won more than I lost, $3.25 I think, so a good night for the Gourlay's.

Wednesday, Mar 14th
Another gorgeous day in the Valley of the Sun. No coats today, it was too warm for anything but shorts and tee shirts.
Gerry came early in the morning and we went to golf with the group from the park here. We have 6 foursomes now so lots of activity on the course. My game went OK today except for a few lapses where I tried to see the entire course. It was a 4 turtle day and yours truly and one other in our foursome made the water, damn turtles anyway, they just come out to watch splash. It was about as good weather for golf as you could hope for.
Marg went with the gals from the park for lunch today. They carpooled and all went to the Olive Garden just before noon. Marg drove and a couple of ladies rode with her and I believe on of the ladies may have navigated, or maybe she has been in that area enough that she just drove straight there. They had 17 ladies attend and as always there were some who would have gone, but that is just the way it goes with large groups. Rumour has it the restaurant sold lots of margaritas today.
When got home it was lunch time and fortunately there was left over past salad in the fridge, so that was my lunch. I never realized how much chopped up asparagus was in it, but fortunately it was easy to sort out the green bits. After lunch I went to check on Wink to see how the ads are working. Apparently he has been receiving a good number of phone calls on his golf cart, so we seem to have it working and he was pleased. Then I went to get Dale to take him to the pool room. Marg had left a note for me that he was looking to play. He is a bit reluctant to just go and play with anyone, but if I ask him, he is usually up for a game. We ended up joining a couple of guys at a table already in play and we had some very good games today. Lots of laughs with this group, so a good afternoon.
When I got back to our place, Marg had company. It was a couple who needed access to wifi and had been going to various places to use it. Anyway they were doing stuff for the tenants association so she volunteered the use of our connection. I'm not sure what all they were doing but he was still in the breezeway using it when we left.
Where did we leave for? Well tonight was the commitment we made to meet Gerry & Deb at Casino Arizona to play bingo. It the process, Marg had offered a couple of the gamblin' gals an opportunity to join us and two accepted. Being only 4 of us Jerry asked if he could come along, so we had a full load of 5 in the truck. We had a nice dinner in the casino at one of the restaurants and then the gals played a bit of slots. We played bingo using the electronic machines and that is pretty slow going, in fact I dozed off while we were playing and that became the joke of the night. Marg shook me and I decided I'd better have a coffee to see if that helped me stay alert. Jerry played blackjack for quite a while and then joined us at the bingo when it was about half over. There were no winners at bingo tonight, but one of the gals made about $200 in the casino.

Tuesday, Mar 13th
The day started out a bit cloudy, but it warmed quickly. By noon it was as warm as a nice summer day back at home. I think the temperature maxed out at about 83 F or 28 C today.
Marg had the laundry hung to dry last night, so it was ready for steaming this morning. After she got that done she went to water aerobics. Attendance was pretty good with the nice weather and the pool was gorgeous. Me, well I had made a commitment yesterday to be at the pool room for 1 o'clock so the 2 players from out of the park would have a resident to play with so they could play. Unfortunately the group lunch we had scheduled for 11 this morning was changed to after 1 this afternoon. We got notice of the change around 9 last night, so was not able to let anyone know of my scheduling problem last night. So this morning I was on my bike visiting around the park to find someone to fill my obligation at the pool room. Fortunately I was successful and it all worked out.
By the time Marg returned from the swimming pool she just had time to get changed and ready to head out for our group lunch. It was about 15 or 20 miles, so we did a bit of car pooling. Two guys with vans took 2 or 3 extra couples. Marg & I along with Kenny & Doris rode with Jerry. It was organized by some folks who are leaving this week, so there were 18 of us who went to Crackerbarrel. They gave us most of the middle section of the restaurant so we could sit as a group. This was the reason we had the last minute change in our time, the restaurant requested we come at 1PM so they could accommodate us in this manner. The food was good as always. Marg had chicken fried chicken and I had a breakfast option, the blueberry pancakes with bacon & 2 eggs. When my order came, I knew I had ordered too much. The 3 pancakes were huge and loaded with blueberries. The bonus was a small jar of blueberry syrup from Maine with lots of berries in it. I was only able to eat 2 pancakes and one egg. Fortunately Darrel was there and he ate the 3rd pancake as well as half of Rita's salad and half of Marg's salad in addition to his own meal. That boy has a big appetite.
When we got back it was getting on in the afternoon, but we had a guest. Wink stopped by with the golf cart he wants to sell. It's a 6 yr old Yamaha, very nice and in like new condition. He had asked another guy to put it on Craigs List, but it never happened so I had volunteered to do it. We took some pictures and Marg with her Ipad put it on a Buy & Sell page here and I put it on Craigs List. When I put it on they phone the install code, probably to authenticate the transaction. Anyway I called Mayva to get the code from her and she thought it was a crank call and hung up on it. So I had to figure out how to re-submit. Anyway we got it done and they already had 2 inquiries within an hour.
About 4 o'clock we had a visitor and then a second one. Before we knew it we were hosting happy hour today. We ended up with about a dozen or more here. It was a good location as it was hot by then and there was a bit of a breeze through our place and it was in the shade. We had a discussion about how hot it was, so I know it was in the low 80's.
We were still full from lunch, so just had a bit of crackers, cheese and salami as a snack. Then we went to bingo. Sadly there were no winnings to report today, but Kenny won twice & Doris once. After bingo we went out to the Village Inn for pie and coffee with Kenny & Doris. A busy day.

Monday, Mar 12th
The day started out nice and it was a beautiful day. This is the Arizona we signed on for.
Marg went with the Gamblin' gals to the Fort, I think there were four of them this morning. I guess they never had any winners in the group, but Marg's winning number was on the monitor as the next to be called for $600 when someone called bingo.. I guess there were quite a few buses bringing people in to play, so lots of players. She said Monday is not proving to be a good day for their group and she will not be going on any more of them, so hoping they agree to a new day.
I paid some bills today. Our pest control guy sprayed last week, so I called to pay for the annual treatment deal. For $100 they spray 3 times a year, something we have been doing since we bought the place and since that time we have not had any pest problems. When we bought the place we had a problem with ants on the back patio as well as a few cockroaches back there.
We also had lots of spider webs under the trailer that we no longer have, so it seems to be a good investment. Then I called the newspaper to cancel our subscription. We get the paper daily on a deal when we get here. There are people everywhere soliciting subscriptions, so when we bought ours it was $20 for 2 months and we received a promotional coupon book.
I tried to fill the steering box, but it was packed with grease so didn't get much in it. Put the silicone on the filler plug and sealed it back up. Then went on to the rear diff. It was complicated to get at as I had to take a few things off first and then the access panel was bolted making it necessary to hold a wrench on the nut below while turning the bolt above. I had lots of people stop to ask what I was doing. It was a very tight work space back there, but I was able to jam a piece of the tubing on the spout of the oil bottle and get oil flowing into the diff. The manual said it takes 2 quarts and I put almost all of the quart I had into it, so it needed the oil. Then I drove it a bit to see if it was leaking. Everything seems fine.
I went to the pool room to play for a couple of hours. I played with some very good players for the first while and then when they left played with a few others one of whom is a new guy in the park. As it turned out he is very good so had some difficult games.
By then it was time to go wait for the gamblers at the park gate. As usual Marg drove Lynett home while I rode on the back and then I got to sit after she dropped her off. Supper was eat in tonight, spaghetti and meat sauce. After supper we sat out in the breezeway for a bit and had lots of visitors off and on. I had my fancy rope light on, I think it was attracting them. Marg did a load of laundry while we sat out there and chatted. The machine is so quiet you hardly know it's working.

Sunday, Mar 11th
Happy Mothers Day to our mothers in the U.K. It rained last night and was still sprinkling in the morning. Once the sun got at it the clouds did not last and the day warmed very quickly.
I got an early start and went to the church service in the park, had to wear a rain coat for the walk down. It was about average for attendance but the announced it will end with the Easter Sunday service. One of the ladies in the park sang a nice solo and the sermon was quite good. One couple had their young grandson with them, who was very well behaved and the pastor gave him a small stuffed lamb, you know lamb of god. Two of the couples there told me they are leaving next week as they have a medical appointment back home. There was also a departure yesterday, so it is starting.
When I got back to the trailer I made oatmeal for breakfast. I'm not sure, but we get the same Quaker Oats here as at home. They offer quite a few varieties that I don't think we have at home, but I stick to the same old tried & true one.
After breakfast we went out to look for a solution to the lighting at the vanity table Marg uses to get ready each morning. There are two light bars with 4 bulbs each, but they generate too much heat, so by the time she finishes she claims it is uncomfortably warm. We started out looking for and LED light option, but could not find anything that appealed to us, so we checked out light bulbs. One of the problems is the fixture has candelabra bases and in the past bulb options were somewhat limited. We really lucked out today at Lowe's as they not only had 40 watt equivalent bulbs but they were on sale, except they only had 6 in stock. We bought at couple of 25 w, but they were not on sale.
When we got home we tried the new bulbs out and they are excellent: lots of light and even after being on for a time the bulbs remain comfortable to touch. I think we have very workable solution, but the ultimate test will be tomorrow morning when Marg uses it.
Lunch was nachos and Marg made up guacamole dip, two kinds of salsa, nacho cheese and had taco chips from the Mexican grocery store [Carnicheria I think they call it]. They are not at all like the nacho chips we normally get, they are a lot better. In the afternoon Marg did a load of towels and put them out to dry. We also had a facetime with Char and two of the girls, so very nice day. I tried to work on the golf cart a bit, but need to get a piece of hose or fluid pump. I was trying to put hypoid oil in the gear box and probably in the rear end as well, if it needs it. Stay tuned for a progress update tomorrow.
After supper we went to ice cream social. Marg tried a banana split flavoured ice cream that she said was very good and she had a piece of cake. I just had the banana split, with regular ice cream. The attendance there was good.

Saturday, Mar 10th
The day started out vey nice and warm, but got cloudy as it progressed. It as very nice until about 4PM when it started to rain. Then we had a light rain, that sprinkled for a few hours, just enough to cause problems with the block party here on Donkey Lane.
We went out early in the day and checked out a couple of park sales, but they were not worth the time it took. The one park was a large one, so we went there first, thinking it was a very nice park and would have lots of good junk. There were several other sales advertised, but they were quite a way from here, so we decided to give it up.
We made our way back to our place as we wanted to have a facetime with Charlene. We knew Lyzi was having an appointment to discuss her progress since her surgery. Unfortunately it was not what we expected and we are now awaiting the results from some further tests.
After lunch we went out to the large Walmart on Signal Butte as we were looking for a few things. I needed to get a couple of stands for when we leave here so I can put the golf cart up. It helps save the tires if the cart is stored with the weight off the them. We also picked up a few other things we needed in the process, as we make lists when we find something we need, so that we don't forget when we do go to the store. Then we stopped at Big Lots on the way home where Marg found a memory stick deal and we need one, so picked that up. I need to copy some pictures from my old files to it for a friend here in the park.
We had to get back so Marg could make her dish to take to the block party / pot luck at 4. This block party was to be on the opposite side of the park from where we are located. There was a bit of confusion around the event as they were all set up on the lane up until a few minutes before they planned to start. At the last minute they moved everything indoors to the rec hall and were able to salvage the event, much the same as we did on the day our lane had it's block party. It turned out to be a resounding success with about 100 people in attendance. It was fortunate the event was indoor or we would have had to pass as Marg still has her cold that seems to have become a chronic cough.

Friday, Mar 9th
This was a gorgeous day, likely the best one of 2018 so far. It got very warm, 84 F in a bright sunny day. We got up to a reasonably early start, but we power slept last night after a busy day.
Breakfast this morning was the rest of the monkey bread. It is always best the first day, especially when it's still warm, but still very good the day after. It was so nice, Marg went to water aerobics. She said it was well attended this morning and her hip was not a problem in the pool. She does most of the routines, but there are a couple that she practices an alternate routine to avoid problems.
While she was a the pool, I cleaned up the power box cover on the trailer. Its where all the fuses are on the outside wall at the back. It had become close to bare metal, I don't think it has ever been touched since the place was built. I had a spray bomb of off-white and wanted to see how close the match was to the golf cart, so this gave me a good opportunity. Turns out it is very glossy and seems quite light compared to the cart. In any event it got the box cover looking more presentable.
When Marg got back we had french toast for lunch. I think that must be my reward for working the ladies tea yesterday. She even had a nice french loaf she used for the bread, I must have really done well yesterday. LOL.
After lunch Marg went to Cato, the ladies wear store that helped out with the tea. She had arranged to go with Doris, who was picking up the garments she wore in the fashion parade. I guess they passed Rita and when she heard where they were headed, she jumped in as she also was picking up garments she wore. Shortly after they got there the place almost filled up with ladies from our park, seems they sold a lot of garments to people here. Well that was all good, but the best part was Marg found a dress that she really likes and it fit like a glove, so she got it. This might be the grandmother of the bride dress, no not another backup, the actual one. Before returning they stopped for some groceries, I think for one of the other ladies with her.
Well I had a choice so I went to play pool. There were only a few playing today, but one table had 2 at it, so I played with them. Played for about 2 hours, the a/c was on in the pool room and it was very pleasant in there. They have the thermostats locked off now, so the temperature was very moderate. In the past sometimes it was freezing in there or when it was cold outside, too hot in the room. I think the park management just decided there was too much of that and this was their solution. The games went well and I would say I won my share, so that is always good. One of the new campers in the park stopped to ask if I was carrying a pool stick as he liked to play and wasn't sure what the deal was. I advised him to just show up at 1 as there are always games and new people are welcome. I should have asked how good he is, as I get enough beatings, LOL.
After I got back it was time to go for happy. It was at the Clifford's today. I believe they are leaving next week, as they have been here since about October. They are having some medical problems and want to get back to their doctor in New Mexico. There is also another couple leaving tomorrow as she is having medical problems and needs to get back to Ohio. The reverse migration is starting.
We made arrangements to go out for dinner with Kenny & Doris to Crackerbarrel. This is one of their favourite restaurants and one that we enjoy. Marg had the cod and said it was easily the best fish she has eaten in this area and if we go our for fish on Friday, this is now her first choice.
Breakfast this morning was the rest of the monkey bread. It is always best the first day, especially when it's still warm, but still very good the day after. It was so nice, Marg went to water aerobics. She said it was well attended this morning and her hip was not a problem in the pool. She does most of the routines, but there are a couple that she practices an alternate routine to avoid problems.
While she was a the pool, I cleaned up the power box cover on the trailer. Its where all the fuses are on the outside wall at the back. It had become close to bare metal, I don't think it has ever been touched since the place was built. I had a spray bomb of off-white and wanted to see how close the match was to the golf cart, so this gave me a good opportunity. Turns out it is very glossy and seems quite light compared to the cart. In any event it got the box cover looking more presentable.
When Marg got back we had french toast for lunch. I think that must be my reward for working the ladies tea yesterday. She even had a nice french loaf she used for the bread, I must have really done well yesterday. LOL.
After lunch Marg went to Cato, the ladies wear store that helped out with the tea. She had arranged to go with Doris, who was picking up the garments she wore in the fashion parade. I guess they passed Rita and when she heard where they were headed, she jumped in as she also was picking up garments she wore. Shortly after they got there the place almost filled up with ladies from our park, seems they sold a lot of garments to people here. Well that was all good, but the best part was Marg found a dress that she really likes and it fit like a glove, so she got it.
