January 31st

We have been here 2 months already.  Hard to believe, the time passes so quickly.
An early start to our day as our breakfast crew cooked today.  I did the pancakes and Marg did fried eggs again.  It is something we just started doing and is unique to our breakfast crew.  I was at the kitchen about 6:45 and she was there a bit later, shortly after 7, I would guess.  We had a good turnout, the last number I heard was over 70 fed and then our crew of 7 on top of that.  We went through a huge amounts of:  biscuits & gravy and bacon.  By the time we finished our cleanup it was after 10 & we were exhausted.  Especially tough for Marg who has been fighting a cold and generally feeling poorly.  We did something else today that was different.  We had some oranges and sliced them all up and halved them to put a wedge on everyone's plate.  It went over pretty well, so another good idea from Marg
After we got back to our unit, we just rested for a while.  It was a lousy day anyway as there was a light rain off and on most of the morning.  Had a bit of company, one of the ladies brought her daughter over to see the little family figures we received for Christmas.  Everyone who sees them is quite taken with them.  After lunch I went out and installed the new outdoor light. The old one quit on us and we need one with a motion sensor so that we get light as we drive up in the dark.  I also worked on my downspout at the front of the carport.  With any luck this will be the solution to my water runoff problems in that area.
Went out to fill the truck with fuel tonight, it looks like the prices have bottomed out in this area.  I saw some rates have risen noticeably from last week.  While I was able to get it at $1.79/gallon, the station closest to us is now $1.99.  Still much better than anything we have seen for a while, but I was hoping it would last a bit longer.  It seems every year the fuel prices rise just prior to our departure, so we will keep our fingers crossed for the next couple of months that we don't return to where we were back in November.

January 30th

It was a rainy day.  At times it simply rained, at other times it was like a downpour.  While it was cool, it was a long way from being cold out.  One of the guys said he had 1 1/2 inches in his rain gauge.  No rain gauge here, I think it's more of a rural thing.
Speaking of colds, mine is much better thank you, in fact almost gone.  Marg on the other hand is at the worst stage of hers.  Fortunately she had the pneumonia shot a year ago, so I don't think that is a concern, but she sure has a nasty cough.  It sounds much worse than mine ever was.
After breakfast we went out this AM and down to the awning place again.  It seems I miscounted the number of openings, so had to get more Styrofoam inserts to block out the birds.  Also got a downspout piece.  It was pretty funny, there were about 6 vehicles in the parking lot and every one of them was Canadian.  When I mentioned this to the girl waiting on me she said Oh yes, we love Canadians.  Pretty funny.
After we stopped at Harbour Freight, well Marg thought it was Big Lots.  I went in to look at power tools, kind of looking for a saw.  Never bought anything, but by the time I found her Marg had a buggy full.  Then it was Walmart where she needed a few things and I needed an airtime card for my telephone.  Also got a light fixture for over the kitchen sink.  It's LED and is a pretty cool light, aside from being very bright.  Bought one for the walk-in closet as well, but it may be returned.  Also bought a new motion sensor light for the carport as the old one does not go out.
When we got back I installed the over the sink light and I believe Marg is happy with it.  It sure was poorly lit in that area and I was concerned that I may be required to work there in an unsafe condition.  LOL.
By then it was time to do our prep work for breakfast in the morning.  We met 3 others on our crew over there and got stuff laid out to help things go smoothly if we get large numbers.  Apparently last Saturday they had the largest number yet this winter.  When we came back, another couple came over with us for cocktails and it turns out Pat likes Scotch, so I gave him a dram of Macallan that he had not previously tried.  Turns out his grandfather was from Inverness.  After they left we sliced a bunch of oranges.  We suggested to our crew that we put a slice of orange on peoples plates and they thought it a good idea, so tomorrow we will try it.
Had supper, a roast chicken and pasta.  It was very good and then we went to the animal races.  While it was lots of fun, Marg had more fun than me as she won 4 races, while I only won 2.  The good news was the elephant won, so that always makes for a fun outcome.  It was a smaller crowd tonight, likely the poor weather is keeping people in.  Several people have commented to us on our grandson, Daniel.  Seems he made quite an impression on people.  In fact one lady had a couple of pictures of him she had printed and gave them to Marg.  They are posted on Marg's fb page.

Thursday 29 January 2015

Thursday, Jan 29th

We both went to coffee & donuts this morning.  The rec hall was fairly full and the coffee/donuts lasted longer than the meeting this AM.  While this may not be an issue that you can easily grasp, we are becoming concerned about the quality or variety of donuts available.  We were one of the first tables and the only ones that appealed were a type of cake donut.  LOL  The things that occupy the mind of a retiree in Arizona!  While there we were reminded that we did not have tickets to Ron E Cash, so got those from Patti, so there is an evening of toe tapping in our future.
It was an overcast day with rain forecast late in the day.  Right after coffee, I headed out  to Phoenix to play golf with Gerry C at Encanto.  Marg delivered breakfast notices around our half of the park. It's kind of a team thing, Taylors do the west side of the park and we do the east side.  It also gave her an opportunity to visit with many people along the way and she was a regular font of park knowledge when I got back.  One of her friends had dropped off some plants as she has big pots out front and is looking to fill them.  A couple of aloe plants and a century plant I believe, so we shall see.
Our tee time was 11:40 and the course played well, we hardly waited on any holes.  The score was ok as well, for me anyway.  I think Gerry would like to have had a better day, but he always says any day on the golf course is a good one.  Made some great shots today, I believe they are in the clubs all along, just waiting to get out.  Unfortunately made my usual quota of blunders as well, including one lost ball in turtle lake.  Traffic was busy as I had to go by Scottsdale where the PGA event early rounds are being played and there is a super bowl area set up as well as the downtown area where they have another big super bowl display and show.  Then of course driving home is always a treat on the 51 highway and the 202 where it meets the 101, but nothing compared to Los Angeles.
Oh yes, Marg also spent much of the day working through all the banking records.  She matches up receipts to charges on the credit card or through the bank.  There is so much fraud these days, she never takes any chances on something slipping through on us.  One of the side effects of doing this was the exchange rate was front and centre, reminding her how painful & expensive that is making our trip here this year.  Into every life a little rain must fall.  That and it really did rain around supper time and well into the evening.
When I got back Marg had a nice chicken dish in the slow cooker and had made a great custard type desert, almost like crème caramel.  The chicken dish was almost like a stew & I always enjoy her mixed dishes.

Wednesday 28 January 2015

Wednesday

Always a busy day for us, we were up and about fairly early.  It was a nice sunny day and as with most mornings a bit cool, but warmed up very quickly once the sun got up.  Gerry Canuel showed up just before 8AM to golf with the park bunch this morning.  We went out to Apache Sun and got off in the second group.  Marg got up and ready for a trip with the gamblin' gals to Fort MacDowell.  There were 5 of them this AM as Rita joined them as well as Lynette's daughter Tammy.
The golf course was busy but in nice shape.  Hit the ball reasonably well, probably my best effort this winter.  Had some nice drives that I failed to take full advantage of and missed a couple of putts that, well you know how it goes.  I always tell everyone that I was never intended to be any good at the game anyway.  We were back in the park by around 11:30.
The gals as usual went the back way up to the Fort.  It seems Nancy doesn't like the freeway, so goes on the bush road, which is 2 lane.  They appear to have a standing joke about a parade behind them, so I take that to mean they don't speed.  It seems to work for them as they always get there and return safely.  There were no big winners, although Marg did tell me she made out fairly well between the casino and bingo coming very close to the break even mark.  I would take that as she was net down a couple of bucks, but pretty minor.  She was back in the park around 4:00.
During the afternoon I went to the awning store where I bought a bag of small Styrofoam like triangles.  These I stuffed into the gaps between the carport and the Az room.  We had been seeing small bits of fiberglass insulation on the driveway and lots of bird activity along the eves on the east side.  The openings are small, but so are the birds, I think they might have been cactus wrens.  My guess is they were taking insulation to make nests.  The light came on for me when I saw this.  When I pulled the ceiling out earlier, there was an area with virtually no insulation and I wondered what would have caused that.  Now I think I know and have the problem pretty much stopped.
By that time it was time to go to a celebration of life for Bob.  He & Bev were residents here for quite some time and was a well known character in the park.  He passed away last summer and his wife and some of the family came here to have this function and clean out their park model, putting it up for sale.  It was a neat ceremony, particularly the part where residents got up to tell stories about Bob.  I didn't feel compelled to make one, but I used to go sit and chat with him on a regular basis.  His driveway has a sign on it - Bob's Office & was popular as a place to keep abreast of things in the park.
After it was happy hour and as usual we sat around until the gamblin' gals return.  It was a bit quieter as the numbers of females was way down today.  I think there were as many men as women.  When they got back we went over to the rec centre as Gary's crew made burgers tonight.  They are always good and good value.  Since they also started doing fries along with chili, it is a good option to cooking and very well attended by park residents.  In fact shortly after we got served, the line extended right through the room to the door at the back.
Back to the trailer where Marg made coffee and we had a turnover for desert.  Then I was off to play poker.  Had a good group, 6 tonight and lots of laughs.  The game went a bit better for me, with winning early and then losing some of it back.  I thinks I was very close to break-even, but then I don't count it.  It's a little like not keeping score, it helps me keep a different perspective.
On the head cold front, I think we are making progress and although we are still sniffling lots and using lots of tissue, there is an improvement.  While I was playing poker, Marg extracted the juice from a handful of oranges that were getting a bit old.  It came out to be fairly pulpy and will be great for vitamin C, so that might push us over the top.
Good friend of Marg's had hip replacement surgery today.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Beth this evening.

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Tuesday, Jan 27th

Got up and started out on our morning bike ride with Larry.  There were no other riders today, but we went anyway.  We only got as far as Ironwood and Larry said he felt a few drops and was heading back.  They were big drops, so I was totally on side with that game plan.  We only got a block and it started to rain.  By the time we got thru the back gate and into the park it was raining pretty good.  We have a rule in case of rain, it is everyone for themselves.  We did get back together, being so close there was no need to invoke the first rule of rain.  LOL.  We got a bit damp, but not too bad.
By that time Marg was up and about, so we went out to the insurance agent we had the quote from and wrote a new policy for the park model.  The rate is about $65 less and the coverage is double, so it was a no-brainer.  I think some of our friends used to deal where we went anyway they took down the info for their own renewals.
After that I went for a haircut and there is a boutique type second hand store there that Marg prowls around in.  Every once in a while she buys something, but mostly just checks it out.  My regular Mexican barber did his usual good job and I was good to go for another month.  By the time I got finished, Marg was as well and there were no parcels, so I assume it was just tire kicking.
I went down to the awning place for a downspout elbow and then we stopped at the ranch market.  You may recall in prior posts, it is a produce market where it seems farmers bring products to sell in a grocery store environment.  Nothing fancy, but fresh produce at great prices.  Marg had a buggy full [they are smaller buggies] and the final tally was just over $12.
By this time the sun was back out and it was nice and warm.  Back to the rv park where I pulled the non-functioning downspout apart.  It was full of mud & I mean full to the brim.  Took me a while prodding and soaking it and got it loosened up enough to flush out.  Hopefully this will make for less water on the pad under the carport.  It's supposed to rain on Friday or Saturday, so we will see.
Had a better look at the drawers I bought yesterday, hmmm.  Some work will be required to make them functional, but still not prepared to write them off.  Should be interesting, given my limits in the carpentry dept.  Put that away and fixed a magnetic catch on the rear door screen door, then went to play pool.  Have not done that for a while and did not play very well.  Fortunately the guys are pretty easy going and we had a good time.  All the while Marg was doing floors back at the rv.  The place looked pretty darn good when I got back.
Happy hour and there was a pretty good turnout.  Marg brought a birthday card for Jim & everyone there signed it, well the women did for each couple, I guess.  It wrapped up early as we had to get back for supper and then off to bingo in the rec centre.  Pretty good turnout there as well and Marg broke her jinx and won.
Will wrap this up to go and take some emergenC, it is a powder to put in a glass or bottle of water.  It is supposed to help with making you feel better.  We are both fighting head colds and they are nasty in the warm weather.  You at least get some relief when you step outside in the winter at home, but not so here.  It's just like a summer cold.  A bunch here think we must have caught it in Disneyland, every malady is being blamed on the place right now.  Like the measles epidemic -- there are 2 or 3 cases in a city of 4 million, some outbreak, LOL.

January 26th

Hello from Super Bowl XLIX headquarters.  That is most of what we see on the media these days, as the big game is now only a week away.  Tickets are in the $3,000 price range, seems incredible.  With the snow storms in the east I wonder if there are people who may not be able to get here.  Now that would be a shame.
It was cloudy, but a very nice day.  I get centigrade readings on the truck even when I change the speedo to mph and I think I saw 20 or 21 today.  Still short pants weather, no matter which it was and no coats.  Went for a ride with the guys on the bikes this AM.  Only 3 of us until Pat got some stuff sorted and then he caught up to us.  I cut off before the long ride and made about 7 1/2 miles today.  That was plenty as the return was into the wind and that always makes for a tough finish.
When I got back, Marg had a cinnamon pull-apart bun pan made.  They were just out of the oven and still warm.  What a great surprise and good way to start the day. She must be getting the oven figured out pretty good as there were no signs of anything being too dark.
We went out looking for insurance agents as our policy renewal for the park model came and they wanted a premium increase.  The agent we were using was supposed to be noted for good pricing, but the first place I stopped on the Trail, they gave me a rate that was $60 less.  When I told the guys that directed me there, they all said they would be going to check out the new agent.  Anyway tomorrow will have to cancel out the old and sign up for the new.
After we went out to look at some building material recycle places that I had found on the internet.  One is run by Habitat and the other seemed a private operation and it was the better of the two.  I was looking for drawers and doors.  No luck on the doors, but found a vanity that had doors that would be fine for our needs.  Well I thought they would be, but the one side measured perfect and I never thought to compare them to the other side, which was wider drawers.  Arghhh!  Anyway I will just have to cut them down.  The vanity was a real good deal as they wanted to make some room in the store.  Pretty funny as the price I paid was the equivalent of what they sold 2 drawers for and said to the guy I only wanted the drawers.  To which the guy said he should have just taken out the drawers and thrown the vanity away, so would not let me just leave the vanity there.  LOL.  On the doors, I think I will be just buying a sheet of MDF and making them.
Got back in time to rip it apart and salvage what I need.  The rest I tore down and put in the dumpster bins.  Now I am half way there, just need to get some time to modify them to fit and then Marg will paint them to match the cupboards.  Pretty optimistic as the drawers now are a real mess and won't even make good firewood.
Went to happy hour to catch up on the news.  There was a bit of concern with one couple in the group who had gone away for a few days without saying anything.  Being in a geriatric group, the speculation immediately goes to health and while that seems to be what it was, it was not a major item.  We also heard about another long term resident here who received bad news from a doctor visit today and has not long left.  That is the unfortunate part of being with retirees, so live it up while you are here is my take-away on that.

Robbie Burns Day

A day to celebrate your Scottish heritage, or at least enjoy a dram of single malt, Slainte!
We got off to a slower start today.  It seems Marg picked up some type of bug and was not feeling well last night and turned in early.  We both seem to be getting a bit of a head cold anyway slept in this morning.  I think a combination of being very busy and it has been a bit chilly at night.  No pink or red spots yet, so we must have dodged a bullet on the red measles that everyone seems to think are coming from Disneyland out here.
We had a leisurely breakfast and then went down to do laundry.  There is a church service in the rec hall every Sunday, so the laundry room is closed until it's over.  Marg had 5 washing machines going and then back for the move to dryers.  I went along to fetch & carry and hold the other end of the sheets while she folded them.  There you go, now I do laundry!
While the machines were churning away, I went over to Ace hardware to get a catch for the rear screen door.  It seems I never get out of those places without a few other things & that was the case again today.  Always some projects around for a handy guy, LOL.
When I returned Marg was steaming the clothes and had a friend observing.  I think she may have converted another iron user to the steamer.  She has been doing it so long that she makes it look easy.
We then went to happy hour and shared some info.  Lots of people curious about our week with family and over to California.  Also lots of in-the-park people stuff happening, what passes for drama in a place full of seniors.  Also some new information of park model sales, one sold and another is up for sale.  This is a big deal as in the past, almost nothing goes up for sale here and when it does, it goes immediately.  Bev had returned with her family and is in the process of looking to sell her park model, a much speculated on item since her husband passed away last summer.
A bbq for supper and then off to the ice cream social.  Pretty good attendance and I ordered my banana split with no pineapple to really shake things up around here.  LOL  Checked the bulletin board and it seems we are the team to make breakfast next Saturday morning.  Oh well it's good to get it out of the way.
It was a nice day today, in the high 70's I believe.  The forecast is for rain either Monday or Tuesday, depending on which report you listen to.  Fortunately Wednesday is supposed to be nice for golf.

Saturday 24 January 2015

Saturday

A busy day.  We went around to a friends yard sale, but didn't manage to find anything we could use.  His sister is moving to Reno and pretty much getting rid of everything.

After, we made our way out to Tortilla Flats as Daniel & Vanessa had not yet been out there.  It was a sunny day, but in the morning the wind had a bit of a chill.  Stopped for the obligatory photo overlooking Canyon lake.

Toured the restaurant where the walls are papered with dollar bills.  If you look close, there are currencies from other countries there as well.  I think Daniel was all set to start stripping the bills off the walls, LOL.  It is pretty amazing to see for the first time, all the walls and the ceilings in some areas are completely covered.

Got back to the park and they got all the last minute things done and we loaded their luggage into the back so we could go out for supper.  By then it was getting warmer and we enjoyed the sun out on the back patio.  Marg took Vanessa over next door to show her the lemon tree.  Although Carol had just finished pruning it, still had lemons on it.  The we went to the Golden Corral for a supper buffet and I think they enjoyed it more than the Chinese buffet we took in.  The food is good for a buffet and the selection of deserts is pretty impressive.
Got them off to the airport in plenty of time for their flight and said our farewells.  Hope their flight is good and the wait time in Edmonton goes OK for them.

This is the eve of Robbie Burns day, so raise a glass in toast to The Bard - Slainte!

Friday 23 January 2015

Friday

Well back in AJ and back to our routine.  Daniel and I went for a bike ride with the guys this morning, we made 5 1/2 miles even though it was bit of a chilly wind.  The weather warmed up considerably, but border line day for short pants. We toughed it out though and never went to the long pants.
While we were out on the bikes, Marg & Vanessa went to Bells and got a few good deals.  They were back shortly after us and Marg made ham & eggs for breakfast.  Nice touch and we were able to leave for the day on a full stomach.
We drove down to Arizona Mills, the big indoor outlet mall.  It was a successful outing, especially for Daniel and Vanessa.  They scored on the first store we went to [Burlington Coat] and picked up as we went along to some of the other stores.  They both really like the selection on brands, designs and sizes.  Not sure how many garments they bought today,  but it was a good stop.

We made it back to the rv park just at the early part of rush hour, so the traffic although busy was not difficult.  Made it back in time for supper.  As luck would have it Marg had a roast in the slow cooker, so we had a great meal in short order.
After we went to the animal races.  The elephant won once, so you know I had a winner there.  Daniel had the best result, he won 6 of 8 races, while Vanessa & I had 4 and Marg 2 wins.  Lots of fun, as usual.  Last night in the valley of the sun for our guests, but they have seen and done stuff for the first time.

Thursday 22 January 2015

January 22nd

Breakfast in the hotel, actually it was pretty good for what was billed as a bright beginning.  They had more than I would have expected at a continental breakfast anyway.  Yes as Phil  pointed out last time, it depends on the continent.   It turned out to be a good deal as Marg came up with a coupon on the rate and then talked the clerk into a two bed room that would accommodate all four of us in a La Quinta hotel.  It was cool at San Bernardino, but that is high country being in what seems to be the mountain area.  Got some fuel before heading out and paid cash to get the lower rate of $2.33/gallon, but didn't fill up.  That was good for the area as I saw rates as high as $2.79 when paying by credit card.  This is a real trend we see in the area, lower prices for cash.  Makes me wonder how much of the sales revenue is being reported as income for income tax purposes.
Traffic was busy as we went out all the way to Indio, but still made more miles in an hour than we did in the 2 1/2 yesterday.  The wind was gusting all the way and when we got to the big wind power installation, most of the propellers were turning.  There must have been well over 100 turbines in a small area.
I wanted to get over the state line to Arizona before buy fuel, so when we got to Quartzsite, I pulled in to fill up.  We also went for lunch to Carl's Jr.   It was sure busy as the place is still full of people going to the big gem show/RV sale/yard sale.  For a small community, they sure attract a huge number of people for this.  Without exaggerating, I would estimate somewhere between 5,000 to 10,000 rv's boon Docking in the area.  These people are dry camping; in other words, they just park out in the desert with the dust, scorpions and rattlesnakes.  Some will stay all winter, others will move on to other places when this big event ends.  It seems to go on for a couple of weeks.  We took an hour and looked around.  Some really interesting stuff as well as a lot of real junk.  I picked up a few things, but I don't think the rest did.  I saw some of the oldest outboard motors I have ever seen right over by the old pump engines, tractors, cars, etc.  There was even a self propelled manure wagon that some guy was taking for a test drive.  Pretty funny.
After about an hour it was back on the road.  By then traffic was light and it was 4 lane divided on the interstate all the way to Phoenix.  Made it back to town just in time for another rush hour.  After LA, I was not about to be rattled by one in Phoenix.  The roads are better, wider and traffic is handled much better in this berg.  Had lots of fun debating with Daniel about the HOV lane or one of the regular lanes.  We must have chosen well as it only took 45 minutes to get through the heart of the city.  On the radio they reported a few major accidents that we could have been caught up in had we chosen poorly, but Marg picked a winner.
When we got back here, we went straight to Ihop for supper.  Neither Daniel, nor Vanessa had been to one before, so it was an opportunity for me to go to an old fav and them to try something new.  I had the usual dish off the seniors menu [yes you read that correctly] and then it was back to the park.
The wind was still blowing when we got to the park and the temp had fallen off quite a bit.  In fact I think we are forecast to be in the 40's tonight [that is in single digits for our metric followers].
No pictures - well I thought the last couple days would hold you for a bit.  LOL!

Wednesday 21 January 2015

A day in Hollywood

When we got up there was fog again today, but it was a lot warmer than yesterday.  We got packed up and then went for breakfast in the hotel.  Got on the road with lots of time to spare - that's what I thought anyway.  According to the GPS, it was about half an hour to Universal Studios.  Well between construction activity and traffic, it was a little over an hour so we never got there until shortly after 10AM.  Now I know what the auto manufacturers do with all their surplus cars, they just park them on the freeways in LA.
Got front of gate parking.  It was a little pricey, but with all the walking we have been doing I knew our crew would need a short walk at the end of the day.  When they parked us, they gave us bottles of water and packs of fruit snacks.  That was something new for us.

Started off our day with the tour.  It's on the wagons they pull around and is narrated, which really helps as it gives us a better understanding of what we are seeing & we saw lots & lots.  The tram went through a flash flood, an earthquake and subway collapse and the King Kong / Jurassic Park 3D show.

Even got sprayed with spit from the dinosaur, LOL.

I know one of the highlights for Marg was the houses on Wisteria lane, where they filmed Desperate Housewives.

Vanessa & Daniel went on lots of rides and all four of us saw many attractions.  One of the most interesting was the one on how they make movies.  We ate lunch in the park and it was pretty good.  Daniel and Vanessa went on the Jurassic river ride, which is a splash ride and a lot of fun.

We ended the day on a high note with the Waterworld show.  It's kind of a stunt spectacular and was pretty darn amazing.  It certainly had the fans all revved up.  If you have been to a theme park, you know how it went.  Bad guys show up and then hero comes to the rescue.  In the end the bad guys are defeated and hero gets the girl.  If you saw the movie, they really do a good job of giving you a sense of he conflict in it and how they used stunts to make it seem real.
The show ended about 5:30 and we got out of the park into our vehicle pretty quickly.  Set out on the highway to get through LA and a better start tomorrow.  Well we pulled on to what we thought was the freeway, but may have been a parking lot on black Friday.  Drove for about 2 1/2 hours and got to San Bernardino, that's about 61 miles.  No the Dodge did not break down, but it sure was stopped a great deal of the time.  Sure left me wondering why all these folks live around here and do that every day.

Tuesday 20 January 2015

A day at the Happiest Place on Earth

The day started out with a heavy fog.  How heavy, well at times it felt like moisture fell out of it.  Because this kept the sun from shining thru it was a bit on the cool side.  We got up and had what they bill as a continental breakfast here at the hotel.  By that I mean they had sausage, ham, eggs, hash browns, pancakes and the usual assortment of:  bagels, yogurt, fruit, cereal, etc.  Much more than we expected and it got us off to a good start.
We took the shuttle to Disneyland and it was great that it stopped right in front of our hotel.  You can see the ferris wheel and a roller coaster in the background across Katella.  The shuttle got us right to the front gate in short order and although the park is right across the road, we are on the back side from the entrance, so a walk of about 1 1/2 miles.  We knew it would be too far at the end of the day, besides Marg & I got the seniors discount rate.  LOL

When we got to the gate, it wasn't too busy because of the fog.  From past trips to the Magic Kingdom we expected huge lines and while these were not short, they were much better than in prior visits.  There were a lot of happy people there, but none more so than our grandson, Daniel.  Length of the line-up was not a factor for him.  Don't get me wrong, the park got very busy as the day progressed, but with the capacity they have, it was a great day to get maximum benefit for the $90 plus ticket.
Got in some great ride experiences.  In fact I started calling Daniel the King of Thunder Mountain.  He rode it 4 times today and convinced his mother and grandmother both to go twice.  Not grandpa did not ride, Katie was the last one to trick me into that.

.

So many experiences and both Daniel and Vanessa had the first
time visitor buttons.  This got us a few perks, like the end cabin on the monorail.  This was something they both really wanted to experience and when we got to the Disney village we just stayed on and did the full circuit.

Also got into the neat food items that are quite different from home.  For Vanessa it was the Mickey Mouse shaped pretzel.  Daniel usually not too adventurous with foods he doesn't recognize loved it as well, so she had to share.  Daniel found some money right off the bat as we were walking in, so got his first treat with that and was really happy about it.  He has eagle eyes for money laying about, I guess.

The parade was great and went on for a long time.  It's always a highlight of the day in the park and

they sure did a marvelous job today.  Lots of theme characters in the parade as well as colourful and accompanied by very catchy music.  The parade went on for quite a while.

The end of the day today was a river special they put together with laser lights, water spray, characters you name it.  Even some fireworks thrown in.  It was about 40 minutes in length and was very unique.  The word spectacular comes to mind.  A very tired group left the park after the 8PM closing time.  Back to the hotel, a quick bite to eat and early to bed.  Need to rest for tomorrow!

Monday, Jan 19th - On the road again

Got up and on the road at a good time, well for us anyway.  We left the rv park at 7:50AM and it being a holiday, traffic was light.  There was a big collision on the 101 loop, but we stayed on the 202 where it wouldn't impact us.  I think it was just shy of an hour from leaving our park that we got through the west end of Phoenix [Goodyear actually].  There were a few places where the traffic got a bit heavier, but nothing too serious.
Traffic through on the highway through the desert was about average, but when we got to Quartzsite, there was a big show on and campers everywhere in the surrounding desert. I think it was the gem show, but it certainly was busy there.  Lots of rv's leaving there, likely to go home after the long weekend, so traffic right around there was noticeably heavier.
From there we passed through Blythe and stopped in Indio for lunch and fuel.  The country certainly is greener when you get that far into California when compared to Arizona.  The traffic also started to build noticeably in this area, even though it is still a couple of hours east of Los Angeles.  I also plugged in the GPS unit here before heading out, relying on it for directions the rest of the way.  By the time we got into the LA area, traffic was fairly heavy, so I can only imagine what it would be like on a workday.  Will find that out on Wednesday when we leave, I suppose.  On our way into Anaheim, we came along on some pretty major freeways judging from the number of travel lanes [lots of 6 each way & sometimes more].  About 650 km's today in total & some good experience driving on busy roads.
The hotel was an easy locate using the GPS.  It's a Best Western, so easy to spot from the street.  The rooms are nice and the beds seem comfy.  The great part is that the hotel is right across the street from Disneyland, although I think it is on the side opposite the main gate, but we will have no problem finding the park tomorrow, we have arrived!

Got here early enough to get in some shopping.  Yes I know, we were shopping the other day, however we didn't get some of the things we were looking for.  As my luck would have it, the front desk staff were able to point out an outlet mall nearby.  We had better luck at this location and came away with a few purchases.
By now we were starting to feel the need for sustenance and went out to TGI Fridays for supper.  Some more good fortune as the restaurant has some good happy hour deals on Monday.  The food was great, everyone seemed happy with their selections.  Got back to the hotel in time for Vanessa and Daniel to get in to the pool.  They are splashing around as I write this.
Another update, like a PS.  We went up on the balcony and watched the fireworks from the Disney park.  Did I mention it is right across the street.  The place is all lit up at night, and looks fabulous.

While we were out looking at the fireworks display, we discovered a place called Tiffy's and one of their offerings is homemade ice cream.  So we tried some & it was great.  Marg had a small cone, Vanessa a slice of pie, Daniel a milkshake and me, well a nice sundae.

Sunday 18 January 2015

Sunday, Jan 18th

Day got off to a good start, Daniel & I rode with a couple of the guys this morning.  The bike Marg got for him worked well and we made about 6 1/2 miles today.  I rode at the back with the other old guy while Daniel rode at the front with Pat and they did some - I'll race you to the ... whatever.  I think he may have found the pace a little slower than he is accustomed to, but he said he had fun.

We went to the big Mesa market today and only covered about half of it.  We got a few things, Vanessa got the best deal on a fancy laser light thing that was about 1/5 what she saw it for at home.  I think Daniel was the first to lose interest.  While it is somewhat unique, there is a lot of stuff a kid wouldn't be interested in.  He looked for some crocs there, then at Big 5 and later at famous footwear, but no luck.  We left about lunch time and had a quick sandwich back at the park.

After lunch we went out to Goldfield where we toured around.  It's a fun place and we got there shortly after lunch and in time for the big shoot out on main street.  Daniel wanted a picture of us in the jail, not sure what that means, LOL.

Marg and Daniel waiting for the sheriff to come out and stop the robbery of the Wells Fargo stage strong box.  The big shoot out was over the strong box.

Daniel tried his hand at gold panning and got some real gold along with a bunch of other gem stones and some fools gold in his poke and had a pretty successful day of it.  I don't believe he has made it into a paying proposition at this stage, but he is on the right track.

We went to the critters exhibit and saw this huge scorpion.

Now this is a spider, makes the ones at home look kind of wimpy.

Then of course a tarantula to liven up the exhibit
No picture of nasty critters down here would be complete without the diamond back rattlesnake.  This was a pretty good sized one, but the good news is he only eats about once a month and today was not the day.
After we went out to the No 1 Eastern Buffet for the Chinese buffet.  It is always good, but the challenge as always is not to over-do it, something I usually fail at.  Probably an early night tonight as we are off to Los Angeles and Anaheim tomorrow.

Saturday 17 January 2015

Saturday

A gorgeous day in the Apache Junction.  Went for breakfast this AM and had the usual: bacon, eggs, pancakes and sat with a bunch of friends.  Great way to start the day and then went for a bike ride with the guys.  Made about 7 miles today, so was pretty much at the end of my energy level by the end.  Pretty neat as we saw a road runner today up by Idaho road.  They are quick, so often you just get a quick glimpse of them disappearing, but not this one, we got a good look at it.
When I got back Marg had gone to a park wide sale down the road and then on to a couple of other places.  I did some repairs and put the patio blocks back in place that were moved by the heating contractor - Cool Cactus. Marg got back and we went out to Big Lots where she got a few things and I stopped in at Harbour Freight for the obligatory free gift [a blue tarp] while picking up a set of Allen wrenches to do some bike adjustments.
When we got back Marg did up the laundry, while I pulled out the trailer and put the Rhino in it.  Lots of stuff to jockey around in there as I am now using it like a storage shed, LOL.  While she was steaming the laundry, I did a couple of odd jobs, like installing new door threshold.  Mark down the street had a bunch of yard waste he dug up around his place and I put it in the back of the truck, taking it to the dumpster bins.  Another one of my good neighbour things.
By now it was happy hour, so we went down for our usual hour.  Then it was supper time: brats and home fries.  Really good.

There was an event at the rec hall tonight, but we passed on it as we had to be at the airport to pick up Vanessa & Daniel.  Their plane arrived at 8:40, about 10 minutes early and the luggage was off fairly promptly after we got to the carousel.  The drive to and back from Sky Harbour was great with light traffic and they travelled well but were happy to be here.  We were all pretty happy to see they made it just fine.

January 16th

Another great day in the valley of the sun.  The day started out windy but not too cool.  Actually most days start out windy as it comes off the mountains to the north of us. That is where Bulldog canyon is where I took the Rhino on a desert trip a couple weeks ago.
I predicted the bikers would be here in the morning and sure enough they were.  There ended up being 5 of us as we started out, but one didn't want to ride into the wind, so we took a different route.  Still got in a little over 5 miles and had a good workout.  It ended up being just about an ideal day for a ride.
When I got back Marg & I went out and our first stop was for fuel.
She had some Fry's rewards, so we went there and got a 30 cents a gallon reduction at the pump.  Fortunately the truck was low on fuel and I ended up paying $1.57 per gallon, which would work out to 41 cents a litre. In the end it was $39 to fill the truck, I have not seen a fuel bill like that for years.  After we went to Best where we picked up a few things.
When we got back to the park, I worked on building a stand and installing the mirror on the wall in the Az room.
After lunch I went and played pool.  Got in with a group that I really enjoy playing with.  It's a take no prisoners bunch, but we have a lot of laughs.  Today many of the laughs were at my expense, but it was still a lot of fun. It didn't seem to matter who I played with, it was the losing side.  Marg went out and picked up a few groceries.  With Vanessa arriving tomorrow she wanted to have some food that would be within what she can eat and had success finding it.
We went to happy hour and it was a packed house today.  The main reason was that we had previously all chipped in and ordered pizza for today.  The gals had selected a great assortment and the pizza was very good.  It was the same place we got it from last time, so it was no surprise that it was good.  Marg took a tray of cookies and one of the other ladies brought some as well.  Kenny & Doris made homemade ice cream, well sorbet actually.  It was a real hit as it was last time they did it as well.  On the way back to our trailer Marg stopped at another happy hour group and gave them the desert tray to take what they wanted.  She was pretty popular when we left that group as well.
After I took the gamblin' gals to Happy Days rv park where the power ball jackpot is $700 at their bingo.  They seemed to enjoy themselves, although there were no winners in our group.  Some of us got very close, but that is like the big one that got away to a fisherman.

Thursday 15 January 2015

January 15th

Another nice day.  While the sun shone brightly, it started out windy and it blew most of the day.  The morning was pleasant and by mid day it was nice and warm, shirt sleeve weather.
The start of the day saw the young couple across finish packing up and pin on to their 5th wheel to go to California.  There was a small group around to lend a hand and to wish them well at the end of their 3 plus years in the park.  Things like inflating the tires on the trailer as the pressure had dropped to below what would be safe on the highway.  They were to go to coffee this AM, but I think that was a ruse so they could sneak away.  Marg gave Maranda a card this morning on her birthday, a few of us guided them out as they had to back their 42 ft trailer down our street and jockey it around the corner to get out.
After we went for coffee and donuts.  There was a good turnout this morning, but no fritters in the donut selection, so we each chose one without icing.  It was pretty funny, our friends had a full table, but added chairs on the end to accommodate us.  Wasn't to sure what that was about, but I think it may have had something to do with a couple of them who were trying to mount a Dave for office in the elections for the tenants association.  I believe I have put that foolish notion to bed, thanks for the support, but not thanks.  Don't really have time for that.
Just as I was getting ready to leave, Larry asked me a favour.  His bicycle was repaired and he needed to pick it up, but needed someone with a truck.  A quick trip down to the cycle shop and he was happy to be planning the ride for tomorrow morning.
I left at 10AM going to Gerry C's to play golf at Encanto.  It takes about 40 minutes to get there without considering traffic.  With him not being here last winter, I used the GPS to make certain I had the right exits on the two freeways.  Got there in pretty good time, but ended up running pretty close on our tee time.  I think we only had about 5 minutes until our 11:15 time and the couple of guys we were paired with were already on the tee when we pulled up.  The course was in nice shape and it was my first time there this year.  It was mostly good, had a couple of difficult holes, but I was happy at the end, never lost a ball, so for me that's always good.
Marg went over to the space emptied by the neighbours with Linda and they brought the wood bench to our place.  It will be great out back on the patio.  They had a bench out of what looks like logs and included it in the deal we made on the lattice work for our fence.  It needs stain, but that is easy to remedy.  Will post pics when she gets it spruced up.   It seems then that Linda had another couple interested in the step they left.  Most people have a wood step rather than relying on the rv steps when they are in one place for a long time.  They had no way to move it, so she backed the Rhino in and hauled it over to their site.  In the process she apparently got some offers to trade it for a golf cart, but we already have one of those.  In her day she walked around the park a couple of times and in the process Elmer gave her some oranges from his tree.  He advised she leave the leaves on the stem as the oranges get sweeter & stay fresher that way.  She had a visitor [who has their park model for sale] asking for a refresher on how to use her steamer and in the process asked if we are still interested in their trailer.  A couple years ago they had indicated they would be selling, but when we came back in spring, the had changed their mind.  Now this year they have it for sale and it includes an SUV.  It's a really nice place, but we're not interested now that we have this place, just wasn't meant to be.
Marg went to happy and I guess there was a pretty good crowd tonight.  I can't say for sure as I never got back to the park until after it was over.  Play was slow today and as a result, traffic coming back home was really heavy.  I'm talking 5 lanes each way bumper to bumper that should be going 65 mph, but barely crawling and frequently stopped dead, making for over an hour travel time.
When I got back she had supper on the bbq.  Kind of funny as it was the first time she has used this bbq and it needed quite a bit of cleaning before use.  That and the electronic ignition is a little different, but she figured it out.  The end result was a nice supper of roasted potatoes/vegetables and chicken breasts.  The timing was about as good as you could get, good guess at my arrival time.

Wednesday 14 January 2015

Wednesday

The day started out a bit chilly, but as usually happens it warmed quickly once the sun was out.  By the time I made coffee and got organized, Gerry C was here for our golf game.  Drove out to Apache Sun and there was a good turnout for the game.  The dew was laying heavy on the grass.  The greens and tee boxes were better as they had run the mowers over them, but it was on the fairways to the point the balls had rooster tails when they ran along the grass.  That was only for the first 3 holes and by the 4th hole we were in shirt sleeves.  I started out pretty shaky, but it came together and had a decent game, never lost a ball today.  Now that is a successful day.  The score was better than last week too, so that was a bonus.
While I was gone, Marg did laundry.  For a change she took the Rhino and that made the numerous trips and heavy load a bit easier for her to deal with.  It was pretty funny, just as I drove up there she was coming up the road in it.  She said the machine is a real attention getter, well for guys anyway.  She had lots of them stopping to check it out.  Something for me to watch out for there, no doubt.
After lunch she went grocery shopping, while I went to play pool.  Not sure who was the most successful, but I think her as the fridge and cupboards are well stocked now.  She even bought some wine, so it must have been a good deal.  We had lots of laughs in the pool room and wrapped up early as I had some stuff to do.  When I got back she was giving a tour of the Az room, there have been quite a few over to see how it turned out.
It was turkey soup tonight for supper.  It's really much more than a soup, more filled with pasta and veggies like a stew would be.  Very filling and very well attended, as is every - free to the residents event.  Marg also bought a nice loaf of unsliced bread and I sliced it with my new electric knife.  She also took croissants and deserts to share.  While others brought crackers and bread, she had the best desert selection, so it was very popular.  It was particularly so when she decided not to bring any of the deserts home, rather passed them to the two adjacent tables.  This really went over well and she was probably the most popular gal in the hall.
After supper I went to play poker and got my usual kicking.  I don't keep track as then it would likely weigh on my mind and I am just playing for fun.  One of the other guys is talking about only playing once a week and that is where I think I am going with it as well.  It seems the two nights a week has the effect of making some of the guys more serious about it, even though it is nickels and dimes.  We had a good group tonight, 10 players so split into two tables of 5, some guys like it, others not so much.  Reminds me of the old song, you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

Tuesday 13 January 2015

Tuesday, Jan 13th

Sure was cloudy this AM, but we went for a bike ride anyway.  We got about 4 1/2 miles in and then decided to return to the RV park.  There was a forecast of rain and the black clouds were hanging over the mountains and the idea of getting soaked out there did not appeal.    Got back just in time, as it rained pretty hard today.
Put up a few valances in the morning in the trailer bedroom and one in the Az room.  Then a couple of eggs on toast for breakfast and we were ready to go.
We went out to pay the Mediacom bill.  They were supposed to give us an adjustment for all the set up problems and service outages, but none on the current bill.  Marg talked to them about it and they were good and put in for it on the next bill.
After we went to Lowes again.  I think if we ever stop going there, they may close the store like they did Woodward's when we moved to GP.  That was one of Marg's favourite stores and she was pretty sure her moving caused their failure.  At Lowes we picked up a door threshold and some framing material for the mirror.  On the way stopped in at Harbour Freight and bought some more odds and ends and got a free 25ft tape measure.  Marg was in Big Lots, but never got anything in there.
Lunch was soup & rolls and then I went to play pool for a while.  Marg did housework and re-arranged cupboards finding stuff she had forgot she had.  Not sure about all this shopping and gathering activity if we are making discoveries like that, LOL!
A stop for happy hour and then home for supper.  By that time the rain had quit and the sun was out, starting to warm up the air.  Supper was one of my fav's, pasta and shrimp.  By that time Gerry and Debbie Canuel were here and we had an opportunity to catch up, as it has been quite a while since we last saw them.  They finally got over their flu and other malady's and came to play bingo tonight.  Deb had on her prosthetic and did pretty well with it, although she has a way to go.  Everyone was close, but not winners in our group.  Three winners at our table, but alas we were not among them.  After Gerry & Deb stopped for coffee and a snack before heading home.  They wanted to get away at a decent hour as he will be coming back in the morning to play golf.

Monday 12 January 2015

Monday Jan 12th

Rained last night and was cloudy this AM. Gary & I went for a bike ride today.  None of the other guys were able to join in, so we made about 5 miles.  The weather was perfect for a bike ride.  When I was leaving Marg said to call when we were about 10 minutes from returning and she would make rolls for a bite to eat.  When rode on for a while, she called back to say bring Gary, there are lots of rolls, so when we got to the park gate he wasn't planning on them, but came when I said he could just take a few home and have them there.  When he got here, he said that he felt it impolite to just take them, so came in and joined me for hot rolls with jams.  They were really good, especially when they are so warm the butter melts right on them.
After we went out to the Red Robin furniture consignment place, but they are only open 4 days a week.  Stopped at Walmart and got some stuff we needed, mainly for the Az room.  Also stopped at Ross's in the same centre where Marg got a hassock.  We needed a seat in there and it will also serve as a place to put a suitcase.  Room being at a premium in there, we think this will work really well.
After lunch I went to play pool with the guys. It has been quite a while since I did that, so it was like a day off with pay, LOL!  Managed to win my share, but the opposition seemed to get stronger the more he played.
Marg went shopping to the mall on Signal Butte where she found deals in Bed Bath & Beyond and another Ross store.  They are everywhere.  I think that is where the hanger thingy you see on the hassock came from.  She also got a cover for the hide-a-bed that is in the trailer.  I keep calling the park model a trailer as it technically is towable, just not like a holiday trailer.
When I got back to the trailer, the neighbours were taking down the sun cover for their 5th wheel trailer.  It is a massive structure of pipe that goes over the top of the 5th wheel and has a roof of sun block fabric.  Apparently it cut their heat build up so much in summer months that it cut the power bills in half.  They are the couple that are leaving as he has been posted to California.  From their he will be going to a posting in Africa where they will be working from ships dealing with piracy and drug running.  Anyway it was quite a chore getting all the piping down and by the end of the day we had a large pile of heavy gauge galvanized pipe, the structure was about 12 ft high and about 40 feet long and the extra pairs of hands Marg & I brought to the task were very timely as they had another farewell function to attend.
After it was a stop at happy hour before supper to finish off the day.  Got some bad news at happy as Norm has a pulled tendon in his foot, so no desert trip this week as he is our tour guide.

Sunday 11 January 2015

January 11th

Sitting around with my coffee this morning and looked up to see Pat at the patio door.  Turns out he was looking for a fellow cyclist.  It seems he was alone as: one down with a cold, one with sinus and a third ran a sock through his derailleur gear, snapping it off.  So I was it for a riding companion.  Dressed very quickly and got on the road, where we did the short track and got in 4 1/2 miles.  With just the two of us the pace was pretty quick & with only one water stop, we were back in the park in short order.  When we got back to the park we stopped to look at Larry's derailleur.  Funny story, it seems Nancy dropped a sock from her laundry load on the gear and not noticing it, he attempted to pedal, snapping the bracket.  We took it off for him and if he gets one at the cycle shop, will replace it tomorrow.  One of life's lessons here that I wasn't aware of:  Never Leave a Sock on the Derailleur gear!
Funny thing, a coyote family appeared in our flower bed sometime since last night.  Marg had a pretty good suspect on the mystery donor, which proved correct.  Linda said she could not tell a lie, might be a descendant of Abe Lincoln?
Had some breakfast when I got back as I went riding on a banana and a yogurt.  Then a quick shower & shave before heading out.  We went out to Camping World to discover they moved the entire operation and while it is now closer, going to the old location was certainly a round-about way to get there.  Not really happy with the selection so will take a look at another place tomorrow.
By then it was lunch, so we stopped at Long John Silver for fish.  Their cod is generally good and being in the area, it was an easy choice.  After we went to Burlington Coat, well one of us did.  The other went to the book store and got a couple of dusters or oaters to read in the truck.  As it turns out this stop did not produce the desired result, so left empty handed.  The good news was the weather, it warmed up to about 20C today.  This is really unusual for us.   After we stopped at a Mexican grocery store and got a couple of Bundt cakes for a farewell party this afternoon.  The store is great, if you like ethnic food, it is a must stop.  Right across the road from Organ Stop Pizza.  A young couple who have been in the park for 3 years & he has been re-posted to a base in California.  There was a nice turnout in the hall to say farewell to them.
Took a walk around the park, stopping to chat with Sue & Larry and tour the park model they just bought.  It looks a lot like ours inside, except they have termites in it.  They have a pest applicator coming this week, sure don't envy them the process, from everything I hear.  They came back to our place to see it and make the comparison.  This is the snowbird version of your show me yours, LOL.
A quick bite to eat at the trailer and we were off to Ice Cream social tonight.  Took a few pics to add to the Tenants Association fb page.  This one is one of Marg's pals, Lynette, who is also one of the gamblin' gals.
Lots of people at Ice Cream tonight, which was nice to see.

After the comments on yesterday's post, I thought a pic of the new night stand was in order, so here it is.  It really is new and has been beat up to look like it fell off the truck.  Hard to believe people buy these things, however now we all know one who does.
