A gorgeous day in Apache Junction.
Marg made up a monkey bread last night and popped it in the oven early in the morning. So we sat around in our pj's until it was done and thas so light. I'm not sure whether this is the new formula, but I think the plan is to go back to the original way.
I went for a bike ride with two other riders in the park and we took the west route again, so it was about 8 miles, uphill both ways. LOL It was a good ride, but I was glad I just had shorts and a tee shirt on as a jacket or long pants would have been too warm.
When I got back we went out to Burlington Coat at the Superstition mall and Marg found a few things. I even found a new pair of sneakers, so it was a good stop for me as well. By the time we finished we were hungry and decided on a place that has brunch or breakfast options. We stopped at two Denny's and an Ihop, but all were lined up out the door. Going out for lunch / brunch after church in groups seems to be very popular here. We ended up at a Jack in the Box where we have had pretty good luck previously and were again today. We both had a combo and coffee and it was fine. The we stopped at Safeway to get some breakfast bars. I am going golfing tomorrow at Encanto and not certain if the food concession is operating so want to take some with me.
When we got home I started looking at a flaw in the flooring in the bedroom. It's just under the vanity, but I pulled up the two pieces that looked like they had some damage. Sure enough they need to be replaced, but I didn't have any left over from the installation, so we went out to see if we could get some. They were bought at Lowes, but neither they nor Home Depot had any that were an exact match. They had some in a color and pattern that were close and some that the joint was a reasonably good fit, but none that were both. Apparently the product changes almost every year in one or both of those aspects. We almost bought some that were a good fit but poor color, but decided to keep looking before doing that.
Back home we had some chill time. Supper was the left over corned beef hash and it was better the second day. Well I am biased, I love that stuff. We didn't have desert with it being ice cream social tonight. They had a good turn-out and we had the same as usual ice cream dish and cake for Marg, banana split for me. One of the guys was around asking if I wanted to play pool after and both Kenny and I went. As luck would have it I had taken my pool cue with me. Well, not so much luck as Marg said .... There were 7 guys and we had lots of laughs, a fun evening. When I got home another surprise, I had piece of the strawberry cheesecake Marg made yesterday.

Saturday, March 2nd
A bit cooler morning, there was a forecast of rain, as much as 1/4 of an inch. At home that would be called a sprinkle and reported as an overcast day, but here any precipitation is a big deal. The wind came up a bit after lunch and the road had some drops on it, but only enough that it was damp.
I went to the clubhouse for breakfast this morning. I haven't been doing this as a regular thing this year, but try to support certain crews. There was a pretty good crowd today and the bacon was very crispy. I sat with a group of friends and it was a good way to start the day.
When I got back, Marg & Linda were ready to go on a search for great bargains at patio and yard sales. We made it to 3 park patio sales and two neighbourhood sales, although most of the good stuff was in one park and the one neighbourhood. Marg got a few things: a nice bone china tea cup, another sign and some trousers. Linda had a whole raft of things, not really certain of them, but she was pretty pleased with a cowboy hat and a bag of mardi-gras masks. I got a Craftsman long 3/8" socket extension for a buck. By then we called it a day, a lot of walking for the girls and reading for me. There were lots of other things, but some of the pricing was not designed to get rid of stuff.
Lunch was back at our place. After lunch Marg made corned beef hash. You know chopping cabbage, boiling it, frying hash browns, chopping up the corned beef that spent yesterday in the slow cooker. I went and played pool for a couple hours with a good group of guys. It was a busy day, with lots going on in the area. One of the things on was a car show at the high school that I have seen in previous years and would have been interesting, but was over by noon.
At happy hour, Marg was just finishing up the supper so I went by myself. I probably had to answer Where is Marg - about half a dozen times. It was kind of depressing as there were lots of people talking about the last of this or that and events to clean out their fridges. It seems the migration back home will start in two or three weeks. By the end of March it sure gets quiet around here, but that is still a month away.
Supper was great, I love corned beef hash. There was a surprise, a strawberry cheesecake, another thing I love. Life is good. After supper I worked on my financial review report for the board here. I am trying to tactfully deal with the controversy on the entertainment committee funding and the old treasurer I dealt with in the process. Marg went out to Walgreen pharmacy for a few things.

Friday, March 1st
Wow, March already. The day started out nice and progressed to very nice. Short pants and shirt sleeves were order of the day. The sun was out and temperatures were in the 70's.
I went for a bike ride this morning with 3 other people from the park. There were 3 Canadians, trying to stay active. We made about 8 miles today and I was getting close to as much exercise as I needed today.
When I got back we went down to the front entrance to the park to replace the Canadian flag. I get them from our local MP, so have taken responsibility for it. The old one was up there for a couple years and was becoming tattered on the edge where the seam had ripped loose as a result of the strong winds here. I ran it up the pole, but not all the way as the protocol is no other flag should fly above that of the home country, so this will be slightly lower than the American flag at the other side of the entrance.
Marg & I went to a couple of yard sales in our area. I never found anything, however she got a really cool, very old metal sign promoting Jaegermeister, some cutlery, a sugar pincers and a meat tenderizer. She saw a few other things, but could not make a deal.
Back home we had some lunch and while still eating Kenny and Doris stopped by to ask if we wanted to go out in the country.
He has a new .22 pistol [9 shot cylinder] that he wanted to try out as well as he wanted to fire his Kimber .380 automatic [6 shot clip]. He had along a second .22 revolver that has a 6 shot cylinder, so a real six shooter. We went for a drive through the Bush highway stopping at a few key spots, including Saguaro lake. After we made our way into a part of the desert where we fired at some boxes set up. I have to say pistol shooting is new to me, so my skill with one leaves a bit to be desired.
I did manage to put in a reasonable showing, especially with the 6 shooter. The biggest challenge was holding it steady, but figuring out the sights and aiming point was difficult for me. We did manage to fill the boxes with holes, in any event.
It was a very scenic trip, with the desert so green from the recent rains and snows. In fact many of the higher peaks [like Four Peaks shown here] still have snow on them. One of the surprises was the back side of Superstition is very snowy, while our side is pretty much snow free today. Saguaro lake was beautiful today, with a very impressive cigarette boat [long fast boat powered by 2 hopped up v-8's] in the marina area.
When we returned to the park it was almost too late for happy, but as we drove past them on the way in, we went down to catch the last half hour. It was a bit larger group and of course everyone wanting to know where we had been. A couple of the guys there are the ones who go into the shooting ranges to collect brass and sell it for scrap. So we told them we went to look for brass for them, but finding none had to make some. While at happy, Kenny got together a small group to go out for supper tonight. We went to Dirtwater cafe so we could sit in the bar out back where they have entertainment. There were 9 of us, so it took a bit of time to get a table. Several people came by to chat us up, including the owner, the singer and a guy who worked on transmission towers around GP. It is Friday, so they have a cod fish special. Seven had fish, while two of us had something else. The singer even performed Four Strong Winds, written and originally done by one of my favourites, Ian Tyson when he was still with Sylvia. We should sleep well tonight.

The last day of February 2019, where do the days go?
Our day started out at the koffee klatch and it was well attended. The donuts today were paid for by the outgoing board of directors. Marg thought she had time to go back to our place for her bingo bag and purse, but the other ladies going had theirs with them. I had to duck out and get them so she could leave from the clubhouse with them. There were four gamblin' gals today.
I had a meeting with the outgoing treasurer and the incoming treasurer after coffee. I have done this a few times now, it is a cursory review of the financial statements to attest to the veracity of the numbers in the financial reports and the recording of transactions. It takes a bit of time, a little over an hour today as I just do a spot check and look for continuity and anything odd. The departing treasurer was a good one until the last year. He has become a disturbing factor in the park, firstly trying to get the entire board replaced, then some of the key people in the organizers of events here. I can't be certain of the reasons, but it appears there are people in the background influencing him. He had people in fear of the review I would be conducting and when I put that rumour to rest, tried to create suspicion about the remaining board members. Most people in the park don't seem aware of the drama and there was a large group trying to get me to take the job. I just come here to be warm and have some fun, so will be glad to be done with the review this year.
The rest of my day was spent doing some caulking after I picked it up at the hardware store. I have a seam along where the roof and siding meet. The stuff I bought is clear, doesn't yellow, has some unique characteristics, i.e.: waterproof, elastic, etc. It was kind of difficult to apply, but I think I have it. I also got another tube of the sealant I am using along the base of the Az room as I ran out with my first tube.
I know most of you are really worried about what I had for lunch, but rest assured I ate. Yes you know it, a ham and cheese sandwich. Oh yes, I had an orange for desert, these ones are just excellent. I swear my brain goes into idle when it comes time to decide what to eat, Marg really has me domestically challenged. At the golf course yesterday, Gerry talked one of the guys into golfing with us on Monday, but hadn't booked a tee time, so I did that too. We also picked up a 4th golfer at coffee this morning, so I will be riding in the HOV lane coming back, hooray.
I went down to pick up Marg and parked at Smitty's place. He has been working on some of the sticks I brought him and they are amazing. He really knows how to get the best out of them. I got lucky with some of the ones I picked this year. They were a bit late getting back, so we dropped off her stuff and went to happy hour in the other side of the park.
Supper ;was shrimp and rice tonight and then we went to the animal races. As luck would have it the elephant won tonight. Well actually I had 6 winners. Marg only had 3, but on one had placed 3 dimes on a winner paying long odds, so got $2.10 returned. There was a good turnout tonight and it was a fun evening.

Wednesday, Feb 27th
The weather is finally getting close to normal. It was 71F or 22C today and the sun shone brightly improving everyone's spirits. We wore short pants and shirt sleeves today.
Marg did laundry this morning, it was her 9th load since Sunday. She must be taking in laundry as I can't hardly believe we have that many clothes here. Then in the middle of the morning there was a meeting of the entertainment committee and they got some new ideas on how to get more people involved in the activities in the park. It sounds like it went on for a while, but was productive. I played golf this morning at Apache Sun and Gerry & I were in the first group out. I hit the ball well for a change, but the putting suffered. I think I missed 4 putts for par, my score at the end of nine was 42, so about as good as it gets for me.
When I got back we went out for lunch today. We stopped at a smoke shop where Marg found a snuffer and bought cigs. The snuffer is used to put partly smoked ones in and then re-light them for further use. She has been searching for one for a long time and it was luck really that they had them in stock. We went to Hackers, but they were packed with folks waiting for a table. We left here a bit early, but lost that advantage with our stop, so opted not to eat there. We went on to the Mirage, a bar and grill for lunch, we have eaten there before, but not for a while. Marg had the cod and chips, me a burger. There was not line and the food was good.
After lunch Marg went for mail and then steamed clothes and got them put away. We got some mail from the UK, thank you Char & Phil. I played some pool. The two fellows I played with are pretty good, so the games were challenging. There weren't as many playing today, but all 3 tables were going for a while.
We went to happy today. On the way we stopped to chat with the fellow who had the car wreck this week and he seemed to be doing a bit better. Happy was up at the far end of the park. It was a smaller group, about a dozen or so, so glad we went.
Back to our place for supper. I bbq'd a steak and Marg made baked potatoes and peas to go with it. It was a T-bone and one thing I have discovered is that by cutting the meat off the bone it cooks faster, so I can get medium rare for me and well done for her. It was a nice steak and after we were done, Marg asked the lady across the street if she wanted the bone and scraps for her dog. She did and was happy to have them.
Poker tonight and I think I was close to break even. There were a lot fewer players tonight, so we had a table of 4 and one of 5. We play until 9 'clock and at the end, judging from the size of my poke, I believe I was very close to even.

Tuesday, Feb 26th
A great day, well except in the early morning when I went for a bike ride. There were only two of us again, so we went west from the park. I left with some trepidation knowing the return trip would be uphill into the wind. We made about 8 miles and my legs were saying enough already about a mile from home. It was certainly a good workout.
When I got home Marg was doing housework. The lady next door has a very ill cat and Marg chatted with the lady helping the neighbour give it medications. I went over to Kenny's where we loaded the tables and chairs in his truck and took them back to the clubhouse. While we were doing it another fellow in the park stopped by to give a hand, doesn't even surprise me when that happens in this park. I was glad he did as Kenny doesn't need to be packing them around.
Lunch today was French Toast made with a fresh loaf that Marg had sliced at the bakery. It was very nice, always is. We have this understanding that any time any meal French toast is a great idea.
After lunch Marg wanted to get a few things. When she asked it I was playing pool or would like to go along, I said if she went to Basha's I would go along. When we got there I went to Harbor Freight where I got a file, masking tape, plastic gloves and a free pack of micro fiber cloths. When I met up with her at Basha she was at the check out. We stopped in at Big 5 sporting goods, I wanted to look at air pistols, but none appealed to me. I did get a bore light for a very good price. I have been messing around with mine for a long time as it just doesn't work when I need it. On the way back I stopped at the Superstition Ranch market where I bought a bag of fresh oranges for $1.50. They are great oranges, so juicy and tasty. We never get oranges this nice at home.
When we got back, as we were driving in to the park we noticed the Canadian flag is getting a little tattered. As luck would have it, I have a new one in the trailer, so will replace it as soon as I get a moment. I was going to do it when we got back, but the guy across the road was putting drywall [sheet rock they call it here] in his new shed and they were struggling with it on the ceiling. They are both short, so had to work off ladders even though it was not that tall. I was able to lift it to the ceiling beam and he got it screwed in place.
A couple of visitors stopped by and we got updates on some friends who are having problems. He was making a U turn [they are legal here] and he was hit by a large truck. The poor guy has a broken back [had it prior to the accident], was scheduled for surgery and now he has missed it, so will have to be rescheduled. The insurance company are giving him a run-around and they wanted to know where the local police station is. Now why would they think I would know, but I did.
Happy hour was at Blanke's tonight and again a smaller crowd, so we had a bit of fun. Mostly just kidding around. I was telling a couple guys about the oranges and one said "Oh yes, they are 2 bags for $5 aren't they?" I said they were but i only bought one bag so it was $1.50, which started a funny conversation. The guy said I bet the bag was $2.50, well the long and short of it was he really wasn't prepared to bet. Later I took the receipt to bingo to show him, but not believing me he asked Marg if we bought oranges. I guess my credibility is suffering. LOL
Supper was a chicken stir fry and some kind of Japanese noodles, lots of vegetables. I was very nice and Marg really specializes in stir fry dishes. Canuels stopped by just after as they were coming to bingo tonight. Gerry's youngest two sisters are in Az, staying with them and they all came to play bingo. We were close but not luck. The money ball prize went at $750. It was won by someone I don't know, darn I was counting on it. The older of Gerry's sisters, Joanne won twice, but our table had no winner even though we were close.

Monday, Feb 25th
A much nicer day, but as usually happens in the desert it was cool when the sun was down. I know that happens everywhere, but it seems more so here.
I went for a bike ride this morning. It was the first day in a while that was pleasant enough to venture out. After checking with the usual riders, just Charlie and I headed out. We did the route up to Idaho rd and back through the area to the west of here, so about 6 miles. It was a bit more challenging on the roads after the flooding as there were lots of stretches where the sand/gravel had washed on to the road surface. Eventually the city comes along and cleans it off, they just push it back to the road margins or I guess we would call it the boulevard.
After I got back I did some caulking along the Az room wall base and the short wall at the rear of the carport. I mainly did the part that seemed to be leaking last week. It is pretty messy stuff, so I mask along the concrete to keep a straight edge. The stuff skins over pretty quick but takes a while to cure, so the working time with it is short. Marg did some laundry this morning, mainly the bedding as the washer is smaller than home so it pretty much fills a load. Then she hangs the sheets on Janice's line.
Kenny came along as I had offered to help him with tables and chairs. They had a dinner for a group of friends tonight so needed seating on the breezeway for 21. Doris was cooking yesterday and today for it. She made chicken fried steak, cream corn and potatoes. The desert was a choice from 3 different kinds of pie. For the cream corn Doris actually creams regular kernel corn. She also made a cream mushroom white gravy for the steak. It was all very nice and a lot of fun.
I played some pool this afternoon, although not well, but I did win a few games. Marg visited a bit today, a lady who has a weak heart, a friend who was in a car accident with her husband [car totaled] and a couple of her pals, at different times. Then she picked up the mail, we had a nice card from Lannie after their visit.
Later in the afternoon I went to happy, it was a smaller group; a good thing. Marg made an urn of coffee for the dinner at Blanke's using the one she got earlier this year. Then we went over there for the dinner. Marg said she had never seen a pile of dishes like that, so just started in on them. Doris was still cooking, so it was a big help to her. After dinner we sat around with the group and visited, a nice evening.
